Ko Phi Phi: "He's on the bucket already!"

After our adventurous night, we were finally able to sleep in and wake up just in time to catch the tail end of our free breakfast. In order to nurse our surprisingly slight hangovers, we headed to the beach with towels and books and spend an hour or so in the sun. We spent a good amount of time just standing in the warm ocean because the sand was so hot! But we got in some good reading and good napping, and I can’t think of a more beautiful place to just enjoy the morning.

Justin had been complaining about water in his ear all morning, but I basically just said “Oh be quiet. I’m hungover too. You’ll be fine.” But as it continued to get worse and swimmers ear and the ear drops from the pharmacy didn’t help at all, we decided to hit the local nursing clinic just to make sure it wasn’t anything serious. It turns out he had picked up some sort of infection (probably in the river near Kanchanaburi), and his ear was filled with puss, not water. So gross! I was completely grossed out by this whole thing, but the doctors see it all the time and just drained Justin’s ear and gave him some antibiotics and ear drops.

We spent the next few hours walking around town, taking in the local life while all the tours napped the afternoon away to prepare for the night’s party. We bought a few pairs of fisherman pants (loose, drawstring pants made of a combination of linen and cotton) and some knock off Ray Ban sunglasses. We also made plans to do a four hour boat and snorkeling tour of Phi Phi Ley to the south tomorrow for about 12 dollars each. On our way back to the bungalow for a quick shower, we grabbed another bucket for tonight. Someone on the street passed by us and said to his friend: “He’s on the bucket already!” We got a kick out of that, especially knowing how bucket nights can turn out!

  1. We're home from Costa Rica now. The photos and descriptions of your funfilled adventures are wonderful - we really appreciate all of the details - even if some of them are about infections! Justin, I hope you are on the mend and not in pain. Glad you sought medical attention.

  2. This is awesome getting to enjoy the sights and stories of your adventure here! I've been hearing snippets from Kjem, Lindy and Greg but this is the first I've gotten to take it in for myself. Elephants, tigers, leopard... getting to be so up close and personal with all those animals amazes me. I love the picture where Justin and the monkey appear to be just hanging out together! The markets, motorbike, street scenes really give a sense of moving about there. And, the beaches look incredible, (I love the mid-air leaps) But I truly had to see to believe the beauty, magic and otherworldiness your shots captured of that waterfall park! (my closest point of reference was like scenery from Avatar, or Lord of the Rings....lol!) Being on the bucket reminded me of the seeminly endless flow of Hennessey and (Asian) Redbull at the Cambodian wedding we were at last Summer. Good to hear Justin's ear is on the mend. We continue to wish safe travels and an awesome adventure! Thank you for sharing so much of it here. Much Love, Michael (& Kjem)
